29.6.-1.8. Mostra degli elaborati studenteschi diplomati all’Accademia d’arte, all’Università di Rijeka – Galleria Zvonimir
This exhibition consists of works completed by the students studying at the Academy of Applied Arts in the University of Rijeka (APURI). The original exhibition was held at the Galerija Kortil in Rijeka from June 12 until June 26. From this larger selection of student works, the Curator of Galerija Kortil and her two interns from the University of Michigan chose pieces to be exhibited in this gallery based on creative uses of medium and visual appearance. From there we tried to design this exhibit to be a cohesive visual experience that would allow viewers to recognize themes, techniques, and mediums in a way that would enhance the viewing experience.
The art academy organized the original exhibition as a way for students to promote their own artwork, and to explore how exhibition can act as a medium of communication between the artist and the public. The students created pieces that ranged from two dimensional pieces such as paintings, strip art, and even illustrations for scientific research. They also had more three dimensional works created from mediums such as glass, metal, ceramics, a mixture of natural and manufactured materials, and even kinetic work.
The final decision of what to bring to this gallery was extremely difficult because, unfortunately, we could not bring all of the pieces from the exhibition at Galerija Kortil. We spent a lot of time discussing and fighting for which pieces we wanted to showcase, and how best to arrange them. In our final decision, we determined three themes of the works, and tried to organize them in the space to create a story of those themes: natural vs manufactured, a study of humanity, and abstraction. As you move through the gallery, keep these themes in mind, and see if you can recognize how the pieces fit together.
